SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Unum Group (unm) said late Tuesday that third-quarter net income came in at $221.1 million, or 66 cents per common share, more than double a year earlier when the disability insurer made $108 million, or 32 cents per common share. Excluding net realized investment gains and losses, Unum said it made $211.6 million, or 64 cents per common share, in the third quarter of 2009, compared to $216.9 million, or 64 cents per common share, in the third quarter of 2008. Unum was expected to make 64 cents a share, according to the average estimate of 15 analysts in a Thomson Reuters survey. Unum stuck to its previous guidance for full year 2009 operating earnings to be in a range of $2.50 and $2.60 per common share.
