K-STATE: Noted Urban Design Experts, Architect and Educator to Present K-State College of Architecture, Planning And Design Lectures RDATE:06112008

MANHATTAN - Two principals of an award-winning Boston firm and a noted architect and author will be the final speakers for the Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning and Design fall lecture series.

Both lectures are free and open to the public.

Ricardo Dumont and Peter Hedlund, principals at Sasaki Associates in Boston, will present "Mission and Place: A Quest for Integration" at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, in the K-State Student Union's Little Theater.

Architect, educator and author Robert McCarter will present "Louis I.

Kahn: The Eternal and the Circumstantial," is scheduled for 5:30p.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 12, in Foerster Auditorium, 63 Seaton Hall.

Dumont has taken part in a number of award-winning master planning and urban design projects at over 40 universities and institutions including Harvard, Vanderbilt, Cornell and Northwestern universities, and The Mayo Clinic. The work has received national awards from the American Institute of Architects, the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Society for College and University Planners. He also has co-authored the book "Mission and Place, Foundations for Campus Renewal and Innovation," published by Praeger Press.

He has worked for both public and private entities and his large-scale land planning, mixed use, and residential design projects range from 5 to 3,000 acres and have received three national "project of the year" awards from the private development community and the National Association of Home Builders. He also has taught at Harvard's Graduate School of Design, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's department of architecture, the Rhode Island School of Design and the School of Architecture/Landscape Architecture at the University of Virginia.

Hedlund is the head of landscape architecture at Sasaki. He is a registered landscape architect with experience in educational, commercial and public landscape design. Since joining the firm, his work has included the master plan and site implementation for the Food and Drug Administration in White Oak, Md., the development of a comprehensive master plan and landscape design guidelines for the American University of Beirut, and the campus master plan, landscape design, and site implementation for The Potomac School in McLean, Va.

Hedlund is currently designing the site for the new U.S. Embassy at the Hague in Holland and a comprehensive master plan stressing sustainability for the new town of Columbia, Md. He also is a founding member of the Sasaki Green Laboratory, which was established to evaluate the operations of the physical plant at Sasaki so that the firm could demonstrate environmental sensitivity in its own backyard.

McCarter, the Ruth and Norman Moore Professor of Architecture at the Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Design at Washington University, St. Louis, Mo., wrote the book "Louis I. Kahn" in 2005.

Kahn, whose style of architecture can be described as monumental and monolithic, is considered one of the foremost architects of the late 20th century.

McCarter also has authored books about architects Frank Lloyd Wright and William Morgan, and has written extensively for a variety of international journals and scholarly publications.

McCarter, who received his architectural license in 1982, is president of D-Mc2 Architecture. He also has taught architecture at universities in Florida and New York and has been a visiting scholar for the American Academy in Rome on three occasions.

Design professionals can submit attendance at each lecture for continuing education credit by contacting Diane Potts. Both lectures are supported by the K-State student fine arts fee.
