ROCHESTER, NY, August 10 / MARKET WIRE/ --
On August 10, 2007, the Rochester Red Wings,
EP Global Communications, Inc. (OTCBB: EPGL), Massachusetts Mutual Life
Insurance Company (MassMutual) and Shire Pharmaceuticals will welcome
cheering fans to Rochester's Frontier Field for Disability Awareness Night
(DAN). As part of this DAN event, just prior to the game at home plate,
the EP Maxwell J. Schleifer Distinguished Service Award will be presented
to Tony Wells and Dr. Scott R. Smith for their work, life, and advocacy on
behalf of people with disabilities. The award is presented by EP Global
Communications, Inc. and EP Foundation for Education. EP Global
Communications, Inc. publishes the nation's most highly respected
peer-reviewed journal serving the special needs community, Exceptional
Parent. The EP Maxwell J. Schleifer Distinguished Service Award is named
after the late founder and editor-in-chief of Exceptional Parent, a true
advocate for people with special needs.
Tony Wells is the founder of Challenger Baseball in Rochester, New York.
The Challenger Division of Little League is a program for special needs
children, which enables them to enjoy the full benefits of Little League
baseball. Since founding Rochester's Challenger Baseball 15 years ago, Tony
has expanded enrollment to include over 300 children. On hand to present
the award to Tony Wells will be Bill Costello, CLF and General Agent of
MassMutual Life Insurance Company's (MassMutual) Financial Architects.
Scott R. Smith, M.D. is a child development and behavioral pediatrician at
the Rochester General Hospital. Dr. Smith spends a large portion of his
time treating children with ADHD. Dr. Smith also spends time as a clinical
instructor at the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester,
School of Medicine. On hand to present Dr. Smith with the award will be
Leonard Fiorica, Regional Director of Shire Pharmaceuticals.
DAN is a national program intended to increase awareness and support for
the 54.6 million Americans classified as having some form of intellectual
or physical disability in the United States. The DAN Program, which now
encompasses both Major League and Minor League baseball venues, is
supported nationally by MassMutual and their highly acclaimed
SpecialCare(sm) program which helps parents and caregivers effectively
integrate financial planning discipline into a thorough, customized life
plan for families caring for children and adults with disabilities and
special needs. MassMutual has been the exclusive national financial
services sponsor of DAN since 2003. The DAN Program is also supported in
part by Shire Pharmaceuticals. In addition to raising awareness, the DAN
event provides an opportunity for many clients and staff of local
disability organizations to attend the ballgame, thanks to free tickets
donated by EP, Financial Architects, and Shire Pharmaceuticals.
"Our goal is to help all Americans understand that we will become a
stronger nation and better human beings when we learn to regard people with
disabilities and special needs as people to be respected, not as problems
to be confronted," said Joseph M. Valenzano, President and CEO of EP Global
Communications, Inc.
"Given MassMutual's longtime support of people with disabilities and other
special needs and their families, we are extremely proud to be calling
attention to their cause through our sponsorship and participation in the
Disability Awareness Night program," said Bill Costello, General Agent,
Financial Architects. "Our goal, and the goal of those we will honor, is to
help people with disabilities to live dignified and fulfilling lives."
"Due to my extensive work in the ADHD community, it is very important to me
that people are aware ADHD is a real and treatable disorder that affects
approximately 7.8 percent of all school-age children and that with proper
treatment people with ADHD can lead normal lives," said Dr. Smith.
Disability Awareness Night began in the summer of 2002 when Exceptional
Parent magazine combined forces with the New York Yankees and Boston Red
Sox to create the first event of its kind focused on people with special
needs.
