MANHATTAN - Two principals of an award-winning Boston firm and a noted
architect and author will be the final speakers for the Kansas State
University College of Architecture, Planning and Design fall lecture
series.
Both lectures are free and open to the public.
Ricardo Dumont and Peter Hedlund, principals at Sasaki Associates in
Boston, will present "Mission and Place: A Quest for Integration" at 4
p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, in the K-State Student Union's Little Theater.
Architect, educator and author Robert McCarter will present "Louis I.
Kahn: The Eternal and the Circumstantial," is scheduled for 5:30p.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 12, in Foerster Auditorium, 63 Seaton Hall.
Dumont has taken part in a number of award-winning master planning and
urban design projects at over 40 universities and institutions
including Harvard, Vanderbilt, Cornell and Northwestern universities,
and The Mayo Clinic. The work has received national awards from the
American Institute of Architects, the American Society of Landscape
Architects and the Society for College and University Planners. He also
has co-authored the book "Mission and Place, Foundations for Campus
Renewal and Innovation," published by Praeger Press.
He has worked for both public and private entities and his large-scale
land planning, mixed use, and residential design projects range from 5
to 3,000 acres and have received three national "project of the year"
awards from the private development community and the National
Association of Home Builders. He also has taught at Harvard's Graduate
School of Design, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's
department of architecture, the Rhode Island School of Design and the
School of Architecture/Landscape Architecture at the University of
Virginia.
Hedlund is the head of landscape architecture at Sasaki. He is a
registered landscape architect with experience in educational,
commercial and public landscape design. Since joining the firm, his
work has included the master plan and site implementation for the Food
and Drug Administration in White Oak, Md., the development of a
comprehensive master plan and landscape design guidelines for the
American University of Beirut, and the campus master plan, landscape
design, and site implementation for The Potomac School in McLean, Va.
Hedlund is currently designing the site for the new U.S. Embassy at the
Hague in Holland and a comprehensive master plan stressing
sustainability for the new town of Columbia, Md. He also is a founding
member of the Sasaki Green Laboratory, which was established to
evaluate the operations of the physical plant at Sasaki so that the
firm could demonstrate environmental sensitivity in its own backyard.

McCarter, the Ruth and Norman Moore Professor of Architecture at the
Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Design at Washington
University, St. Louis, Mo., wrote the book "Louis I. Kahn" in 2005.
Kahn, whose style of architecture can be described as monumental and
monolithic, is considered one of the foremost architects of the late
20th century.
McCarter also has authored books about architects Frank Lloyd Wright
and William Morgan, and has written extensively for a variety of
international journals and scholarly publications.
McCarter, who received his architectural license in 1982, is president
of D-Mc2 Architecture. He also has taught architecture at universities
in Florida and New York and has been a visiting scholar for the
American Academy in Rome on three occasions.
