Oct. 03--SCHENECTADY -- A Saratoga Springs man was sentenced to six months behind bars Tuesday for scamming the state and MVP Health Care of Schenectady out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. The scamming has been going on for years, according to the Schenectady County District Attorney' Office.
All but $5,700 of the $100,000 restitution William Uris made to the court will be split among eight businesses he bilked through a scheme involving a company called National Business Owners Association.
The rest will go to the state for fraudulent medical claims that were paid out, according to Assistant District Attorney Katie Q. McCutcheon.
"The impact is significant because the status of these people's health insurance is still in flux," the prosecutor said.
The 54-year-old Uris also agreed to surrender his insurance broker license and not engage in any insurance business for the five years he will be on probation.
During that time, he must also make monthly payments on the nearly $28,000 he will still owe the state.
In August, he pleaded guilty to grand larceny and attempted grand larceny, both felonies, for crimes that occurred between February 2008 and June 2011, said authorities.
The district attorney's office said Uris told the eight business owners that if they joined NBOA he could get them less expensive health insurance, which he did by enrolling them in Healthy New York even though they didn't qualify for the program.
He then falsely completed the Healthy New York applications submitted to MVP on behalf of the businesspeople, said authorities.
Uris pocketed the fees he collected through the business association.
The joint probe was handled by the state Department of Financial Services Criminal Investigations Unit and MVP Special Investigations Unit.
Last year, Uris was in the news when his talking parrot flew away from his Henry Street home. He posted about the disappearance of the bird on his Facebook page and offered a reward for the blue amazon's safe return. It's unclear if the parrot was ever found.
