JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., Oct. 18 -- The Missouri State Treasurer issued the following news release: State Treasurer Clint Zweifel (ZWY-ful) announced today he has returned more than $912,000 to five account owners since the beginning of September. Since January 2009, Treasurer Zweifel has returned $133 million to more than 418,000 account owners.
"Every day my Unclaimed Property staff talks to owners of Unclaimed Property in an effort to return accounts large and small," Treasurer Zweifel said. "There are 58 accounts with $100,000 or more in them waiting to be returned. The first account was returned to an individual in Independence. It totaled $107,300 and was made up of a certificate of deposit. The second account was returned to an individual in Minnesota, a former Missouri resident. It totaled $100,500 and was made up of a mutual fund. The third account was returned to a business in St. Louis. It totaled $115,200 and was made up of 29 separate claims the largest of which were stocks and dividends checks. The fourth account was returned to a trust in St. Louis. It totaled $201,700 and was made up of proceeds from an insurance policy. The fifth account was returned to a Pettis County business. It totaled $387,600 and was made up of four separate claims the largest of which was stock. The recipients' names are not being released for privacy reasons.
Fifty-eight accounts worth more than $100,000 each remain to be returned. The geographic breakdown is: 24 in St. Louis County; 17 in Jackson County; six in St. Louis City; three in Camden County; two in Boone County; and one each in Butler, Clay, Cole, Franklin, Jasper and Johnson counties.
