Feb. 26--Community Health Alliance, a designated Consumer Operated and Oriented Plan health insurance option, officially opened its Tennessee headquarters today.

An open house was held at its new offices at 445 South Gay St. in the historic Miller's Building formerly occupied by ImagePoint

President and CEO Jerry Burgess touted the private, nonprofit insurance company as a consumer-friendly option that is governed by its policy holders.

The CO-OP was given the green light by the federal government last September, when it was awarded a loan of up to $73.3 million.

It has already hired about 30 employees and plans to establish offices across the state within the next year.

Community Health Alliance will begin enrolling members this fall for coverage effective 2014 through the new Health Insurance Marketplace.
