The LMTAAA helps vulnerable adults access a wide variety of social and health services to enable them to stay in their homes.
"I'm just who I am," McClurg told The Chronicle during an interview earlier this month with a smile on his bearded face. "I'm kind of absent-minded."
McClurg's present situation is partly due to injuries suffered during a life of hard work in the construction industry.
"I hung sheetrock for 35 years," he said.
That work left him with a compressed spine and chronic pain, said Registered Nurse
Apperson is helping McClurg with case management to coordinate his medical and dental visits. She said their goal right now is to treat his pain and help him transition to a walker, rather than a wheelchair full time.
"That's one of the things we love to do is to help people stay in their home or get in their own home," Apperson said.
McClurg's caregiver, also with the LMTAAA,
"He loves to be able to get outdoors and enjoy life," Warren said.
McClurg was homeless for five or six years, he said, before a stint in a nursing home, and has recently been receiving help from the LMTAAA, allowing him to maintain an apartment and begin getting coordinated care for his health issues.
McClurg said his life right now is "a lot better than before."
"I don't have to crawl under some tree and find some cover," he said, recalling his homeless years. "This is the best thing I could possibly imagine."
Even so, McClurg said he struggles with depression.
"I used to work on cars, I used to do all kinds of things I can't seem to do right now," he said. "I get depressed ... because I can't get out and do stuff like I ought to."
