The girl rebuffed him and told her family, who reported it to Plantation police, investigators said. Law enforcement took over her email account and set up a cellphone number that the suspect thought belonged to the girl.
After weeks of receiving increasingly graphic messages and photos of his genitals, investigators arrested Taffe on Wednesday morning at a local mall when they said he showed up thinking he was meeting the girl for sex.
Taffe, an insurance broker who lives in
"This is a former church member and, as soon as we learned of these allegations, all of us, our entire board, acted appropriately to fulfill our mission of protecting all of God's children," Cutie said. He said Taffe, who volunteered as a greeter, was asked to leave the congregation in the last 30 days.
Taffe used a jail wheelchair in federal court Thursday. He made several references to his age and health issues and told the judge he is married to a woman in
"I'm halfway through [reading the criminal complaint] and there are a number of things that are strongly wrong," Taffe told a judge.
If convicted, he faces 10 years to life in federal prison.
Taffe sent the girl email messages asking her to be his "secret friend." At church, he asked her "When are you going to give it up?" and "How long do I have to wait?" Plantation Detective
Undercover agents posed as the girl and sent him emails and texts. He sent back texts and photos of her that he clandestinely took at church. In late September, he sent a text informing the girl that he "wanted her legs wrapped around his head and shoulders," investigators said.
He instructed her to masturbate, practice for sex and fantasize about him, sent photos of his genitals covered by underwear and a photo a "white males's erect penis," agents wrote. He also urged her to get birth control pills and said he wanted meet for sex and "test" her birth control.

His texts became even more sexual and graphic, agents wrote.
In early October, Taffe and the undercover agents began texting about meeting for sex and he sent photographs of his bedsheets and ice cream he had bought in preparation, according to court records. He told her "this was my dream when we met ... so many years waiting."
Taffe arranged to meet the girl on Tuesday at the Westfield Broward mall and agents watched him waiting for her. When the girl did not show up, they said Taffe sent her messages rescheduling their meeting to the next day.
Taffe was arrested when he arrived at the mall Wednesday morning. Agents said he admitted sending the messages and said he would have had a sexual encounter "if the opportunity presented itself," agents wrote.
