Need Inspiration To Rock On?
Netflix, oh you evil film fatale. You lure us with movies upon movies and TV series to be devoured as would a reclining Roman emperor biting another grape from the bunch.
The next episode is starting in 5? … 4? … 3? … 2? …1 seconds? Well, I can’t see any good reason get off this couch this weekend anyway …
One of my guilty Netflix pleasures is rock ’n’ roll biographies. It might be because during rock’s heyday not every detail was known about these people. You knew them through their music, stared at the record cover and scrutinized the lyrics. If I find a bustle in my hedgerow I shouldn’t be alarmed? OK, then. So noted.
I’m fascinated by the difficulties they all went through. Most of the big stars were misfits in school, turned to music for escape, struggled to be heard, fought with the music business and somehow managed to produce art that motivated generations.
They usually made it look easy. By the time our impressionable teen eyes saw them, they were gods and goddesses stomping around on stage like they were born there.
Like Janis Joplin with her booming voice and her what-the-hell-are-you-lookin-at attitude. But she was really an unsure young woman writing home to mom, pining away for the one guy who seemed to love her for who she was until she died alone in a motel room.
It’s a reminder that everybody is carrying something. Just because some people make excellence look easy, doesn’t mean it is.
The feature article by Managing Editor Susan Rupe in our August edition is another reminder that people who seem to be driven on a mission are often in fact on a mission. Make time to ask them what drives them.
You can bet it’s a good story. The couch can wait.
