The department is also purchasing a four-wheel pedal kart and will set up an obstacle course to show young drivers how easy it is to get into an accident when a driver is not paying attention to the road or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Lt.
"The junior high students really haven't been exposed to driving yet," Pichnarcik said. "Kids in high school have had a taste of it and we want to make them aware of what they're going to lose if they drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol or if they're distracted because of texting."
While the program will launch officially in the fall, Pichnarcik said the program will be tested out on teenagers involved in the Cheshire Youth Services programs over the summer.
"We want to work out all the kinks," he said.
During a ceremony held at the department's headquarters on Monday,
"We hear talk all the time about public-private partnerships, but this has the potential to make a real difference," Dryfe said. "If we can prevent just one student from getting into an accident as a result of this, it will have been worth it."
"They would lose all of those if they are involved in an accident that is drunken or distracted driving related," Gromko said.
