"In the middle of the day we're experiencing traffic jams coming into the city. I think it's because it's a popular place to have lunch," Walter said. About 600 vehicles per hour travel through there in both directions throughout the day, "a real consistent flow," he said.
About 30 homes will be affected by the new parking restriction, he said. Many of those homes' occupants attended Monday's meeting and made their displeasure about the parking restrictions known.
The city also plans to tinker with the traffic signal timing along
Grocott and some residents suggested that the city start with those two measures first before taking the drastic step of turning available parking into all-day traffic lanes.
Jara, who works out of his home as an insurance broker, said he felt residents' complaints fell on deaf ears.
"I understand it's a mild inconvenience two times a day, but for us, we've got to live there," he said. "The logic says, 'Let's try these two things before we negatively affect these people.' "
Staff will report back to the council this fall how the parking restrictions and other measures are working, Walter said.
