Priority Health Launches Diabetes Prevention Program
A local health insurer hopes to engage employees in managing diabetes via a new prevention program.
Grand Rapids-based Priority Health said last month it has launched PriorityCares: Diabetes prevention and management, or DPM, an offering designed to help employers improve the health of employees diagnosed with pre-diabetes or diabetes.
The offering is a participation- and outcomes-based program.
The U.S. spends more than $245 billion per year on diabetes treatment and losses attributed to workforce productivity, according to the American Diabetes Association. On average, patients with diabetes spend 2.3 times more on medical costs than those without.
"We're focusing on a three-pronged approach with PriorityCares: incentives, personalized nurse support and technology," said Marti Lolli, SVP, commercial markets, Priority Health. "We're confident this product will support employers in their effort to improve the health of their workforce, while tackling the health care costs impacting their bottom line."
Once enrolled in PriorityCares: DPM, Priority Health said its management team develops personalized plans in conjunction with employees and their doctors and connects employees to resources, including diabetes education programs. Members can earn up to $320 by completing an annual online assessment, maintaining healthy weight and blood pressure, staying active and visiting their doctors.
Additionally, Priority Health members have access to the insurer's separate diabetes prevention program, or DPP, which it said has been "proven" to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by almost 60 percent.
