Fairchild noted there are discussions in the state capitol about changes to the tax structure that, if enacted, would eliminate real estate taxes. That would shift public school funding to sales and personal income taxes.
Past attempts at such changes failed in the Legislature. A new legislative session began this month.
Should similar proposals find support and, ultimately, be adopted, almost half the district's tax revenue would switch from local to state tax sources. As such, Fairchild said those revenues could vary, making long-term planning more difficult.
"They don't pay sales or income taxes, they collect it," Swope said. "That would get them off scot-free."
